Excuse me, not prison, but a public school.
This unwarranted police search of teenagers, who are not suspected of any crime, demonstrates quite clearly that everyone is a treated like a criminal unless proven innocent. The search is justified to keep our children safe from drugs, yet with fantastic amounts of money spent on the drug war, and on EPD salaries, kids still do drugs (surprise!). Instead of recognizing their failure and close its doors, any any failed business must do, police agencies continue to see their budgets rise and their powers enhanced. What exactly is their incentive for keeping the peace?
The article says that no individual teenagers were searched, yet their backpacks were. Next time a robber demands to check a woman's purse, but not her pockets, what will the police say?
This is a nice example of the disaster of the drug war benefiting from the disaster of public schooling. Abolish both.
