Why does this bureaucrat need to plan the Exeter economy and mold it into another Portsmouth? Obviously, we know the general ulterior motive: increasing “revenue,” i.e., increased expropriation by taxation.
Yet, there is something disturbing about a tax-funded individual whose job is to mold Exeter into whatever the political class think best. It belies an underlying government-knows-best presumption, a notion that the hapless taxpayers are too stupid to figure things out for themselves.
Private owners of vacant lots have enough incentive to renovate and/or sell. Potential entrepreneurs do not need bureaucrats to tell them when opportunities are available. That they might be reluctant to start a business in Exeter demonstrates that there are other, more profitable opportunities. However, maybe they do need bureaucrats’ favor. After all, the taxes, permits, and regulations are huge burdens, and so greasing the slimy wheels of government could help them. Darren Winham’s political intrusions into businesses reek of potential political shenanigans.
